Paint color can have the most dramatic effect on your space, plus it is the least expensive way to update your home, so with all of the available color selections out there today, how do you pick the best one for the interior of your home?

First things first, it’s always a good idea to start with what inspires you: a favorite color, an unforgettable vacation, something you’ve seen in a magazine, or the surrounding landscape.

Secondly, what’s the desired visual impact of the color? Ask yourself: What type of mood do I want to convey in the space? Do you want a relaxing feel in the bedroom, or an energizing feel in the living room? Bright, rich colors, like yellow and red, liven up a space, while blues, purples and greens create tranquility.

Last, don’t forget to keep your furniture and key elements of your home in mind. For instance, the color of your flooring is an important consideration because it anchors the room and can impact the overall effect of the color on the wall. Furnishings play an important role as well because they’re usually the most expensive items, and aren’t easily replaced, try to coordinate a color scheme that ties everything together.

With that said, here are some ideas to get you started:

Seasonal Inspired Colors

  • Summer – The beach, ice cream, fresh air, green grass, blue sky and flowers. The colors of summer are warm and welcoming and will certainly perk up the mood in any room.
  • Fall – Get inspired by the harvest season and incorporate rich autumn leaves, pumpkin, and apple colors into your interior.
  • Spring – You know spring has sprung when the grass starts to turn green and the flowers are in bloom, why not paint have that feeling year round with these spring inspired colors?
  • Winter – Cool hues of gray, blue, and brown capture the steel skies and forest shadows of winter creating a palette that is subtle yet deep.

Neutrals

If you want your walls to be a backdrop rather than the main feature, then neutrals are the way to go. Don’t be too quick to dismiss them as boring either—grey is the new “it” color and has become a timeless alternative to white.
